Solution-Focused Brief Therapy

Solution-focused brief therapy is a therapeutic approach based on solution-building rather than problem-solving. It focuses on what clients want to achieve through therapy rather than on the problem that made them seek help. Because it explores current available resources rather than present problems and past causes, it typically involves between 8 to 10 sessions.

By helping people identify the things they wish to change in their life and to attend to those things that are currently happening that they wish to continue to have happen, clients construct a clearer understanding of their present life situation. Working together to set realistic and positive goals provides the client with an empowered vision of what is possible in their life.

Solution-focused therapy enables the client to:

  • Shift a negative orientation,
  • See through confusing detail and address patterns that hold the problem in place,

  • Make clear, mutually agreed goals,

  • Help clients develop a positive expectation,

  • Help the client to recognize positive changes in between sessions,

  • Reconnect the client with their unique experiences and create a sense of hope.
